How it works

Make a movement

Draw on the first frame, duplicate it and change a detail. Press play to see the difference.

Look between frames

Onion skin shows the previous drawing as a guide. Use the timeline to set the pace.

Give your film sound

Advanced mode offers audio, exposure timing and export to movie or GIF.

Make a fish swim

Start with two frames. A small change to the tail can make a whole fish look alive.

  1. Draw a simple fish in the first frame. Duplicate the frame on the timeline to keep the body still.
  2. Redraw the fin in the next frame. Press Play and try making the difference larger or smaller.

Find the next pose with onion skin

Onion skin shows a faint neighbouring frame. It helps you draw and is left out of the export.

  1. Switch on onion skin, add a frame and draw the arm a little higher than in the previous pose.
  2. Play the sequence. Add an in-between drawing if the movement jumps, or hold a pose longer for a pause.

Keep the background still

Separate the moving subject from the scenery using layers so you can change one without redrawing the other.

  1. Switch from Child to Advanced. Put the character on its own layer and name it.
  2. Duplicate the frame and change only the figure. Preview the jump and adjust how long each frame lasts.

Play it back and export

Watch the whole sequence before choosing a format. An editable project and a finished film serve different purposes.

  1. Keep the project to edit individual frames later. Choose Export to make a GIF or a video in a format your browser supports.
  2. For sound, open the audio tools in Advanced. Choose video for an audible result; GIF only carries pictures.

More ways to create

01

Sketch the next pose

Use the same graphite, ink and brushes as Sketch. Turn on onion skins to see the previous pose while drawing the next one.

02

Give a frame time to breathe

Duplicate a frame to draw a new pose or hold a picture with a longer exposure. Loop the sequence to find the moment that needs changing.

03

Separate the character and background

Put the character on a separate track and keep the background in place. Select a range to edit several frames together.

04

Add sound and export

Place audio on the timeline and listen during playback. Use GIF for a silent loop, or export a movie when sound matters.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. Open Sketch or Animate to try it. Guest work exists only in the open tab. Create an account to save it in your studio.

Can I use a stylus?

Yes. GoCreate reads pen pressure and tilt when the browser and device report them. Pen mode lets you draw with the pen and navigate with your fingers. Support depends on the pen, driver and browser.
