How it works

Make your first mark

Choose Pen or Brush in Child mode. Try six materials at a time, pick a colour and draw on the page.

Find a pencil grade

9H makes a fine, light line. HB and F suit outlines. Softer B grades make broader, darker shadows.

Build up layers

Switch to Advanced for the full material library, selection, layers and export.

A tour of the studio

Draw a fish with four tools

Child mode leaves most of the screen for the paper. Start with an oval body and a triangle for a tail.

  1. Tap Pen and choose a pencil. Draw a closed outline in a dark colour.
  2. Pick orange, then tap inside the fish with Fill. Switch to Brush to add blue waves. Undo removes the last mark.

Build a watercolour in layers

Try painting a flower using just two colours. Leave some paper showing through for the highlights.

  1. In Advanced mode, sketch lightly with a hard pencil. Open Layers and add a paint layer above the sketch.
  2. Pick Watercolour from the brush library. Lower the opacity beside the active brush and build up shadows with overlapping strokes.
  3. Hide the sketch layer briefly to see which edges still need a line.

Choose a graphite grade

Make three marks with 9H, HB and 9B. The difference is easiest to see when you shade.

  1. Use an H grade for pale construction lines, HB for an outline and a soft B grade for the deepest shadows.
  2. A compatible stylus can vary pressure. With a finger or mouse, adjust the size in the brush panel.

Pick your paper and return to a drawing

From the sketchbook you can start on blank paper, colour an illustration or join numbered dots.

  1. Choose landscape for a wide scene like a harbour, or portrait for a face.
  2. To keep a guest drawing, choose Guest · unsaved and follow the instructions before closing the tab. Signed-in projects reopen from your sketchbook or gallery.

More ways to create

01

Explore the graphite scale

Try 9H for construction lines, HB for outlines and 9B for deep shadows. A compatible pen lets pressure change your line width.

02

Layer a wash or build up pigment

Overlap translucent watercolour, lay down dense oil pastel or shade with an airbrush. Flow controls how quickly pigment builds up.

03

Move one part of a drawing

Draw the foreground on its own layer, then select, move, scale or rotate it. Lock the background while you work.

04

Keep the next step open

Export an image to share or a project file to edit later. You can also take a copy of your painting into Animate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. Open Sketch or Animate to try it. Guest work exists only in the open tab. Create an account to save it in your studio.

Can I use a stylus?

Yes. GoCreate reads pen pressure and tilt when the browser and device report them. Pen mode lets you draw with the pen and navigate with your fingers. Support depends on the pen, driver and browser.
